Governor's appointments : Governor A. B. Chandler, 1956-1959.

These records document the governor's authority to appoint civil officials. Included are instructions to the secretary of state to issue appointments to fill vacancies on the state and local level. The governor could fill certain positions in state government by executive appointment; he could also appoint local officials, such as county judges and police judges, when vacancies occurred due to resignation or death, until elections could be held.
